SUCCESS STORIES

Our Friends Place changes the lives of young women in Dallas.

Quinta

Growing up, Quinta lived in four different states, attended six different high schools, eight different middle schools and countless elementary schools. At the age of 17, her mother, emotionally, physically and mentally exhausted from years of trying to provide financial stability for her family, informed Quinta she could no longer serve as her mother and Quinta must learn to face the real world.

In her senior year of high school, Quinta found refuge at Our Friends Place. With a stable roof over her head and a strong support system, Quinta graduated from Lincoln High School and was accepted at the University of North Texas. During the first two years of college, Quinta returned to Our Friends Place to celebrate the holidays and spend the summers, providing her an opportunity to save money while employed at Auntie Anne’s.

By her junior year in college, Quinta secured an apartment of her own. In her senior year, she determined she wanted to give back and served as an intern at Our Friends Place - the place that taught her independence, the place that changed her life, the place that encouraged her to reach her goals. In 2013, Quinta graduated from the University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation and secured a position at State Farm Insurance before even graduating. Upon graduation, Quinta said, “Thank you to everyone at Our Friends Place. I would not have been able to accomplish what I have without your help.” Quinta knows she can always find the guidance and support every girl deserves at Our Friends Place, her home.

Tamara

Tamara is a senior at North Dallas High School and part of Our Friends Place SOAR on campus to build her own Strengths, Opportunities, Allies and Resiliency.  Before working with Our Friends Place, Tamara was unsure of her future and worried about leaving her home to pursue college. As a member of SOAR at North Dallas High School, she will graduate with the skills to succeed in college, build new relationships away from home, and feel safe being herself.  Tamara has been accepted to university and is excited to start classes in fall 2019!

Kita

Kita was homeless when she came to Our Friends Place, but there was a waitlist to move in to our Transitional Living Centers.  Our SOAR program was created for young women like Kita so they can get help, even when they have nowhere to go.  Kita joined SOAR at our office and eventually moved in to one of our Transitional Living Centers. She has continued to participate in both programs, learning valuable skills and coming home to her own apartment at Our Friends Place.  Today, she is building her future and helping her OFP roommates with the skills she learned at SOAR.

Kat

"I went to Our Friends Place after a slew of foster homes. I was tired of trying to fit into other people’s families. It was like constantly changing yourself, but you can never be yourself.

One of the first things OFP said to me was: 'It’s your home and it’s what you make it'. OFP helped me by changing my mind frame of being the victim to having more power and making my life what I wanted it to be.

Today, I work in biomedical research. I’m finishing my degree in Animal Science. I’m married and have a baby. Life hasn’t been a constant struggle; there were times where I had that moment of peace and happiness, but nothing like where I am now. Now I just look forward to everything!"

Tishana

Tishana is a resident in our Transitional Living Center program.  To prepare for moving into her own apartment, Tishana joined Our Friends Place SOAR with Kit at the office.  At SOAR, Tishana doubled-down on the life skills she needs to be successfully independent.  She uses budgeting and the financial literacy training offered at Our Friends Place to meet her savings goals. Tishana is confident and prepared to move out of our Transitional Living Center this summer!
