Our History
For over twenty
years, Our Friends Place has been dedicated
to providing a foundation for girls and
young women to build from adversity by
learning a self-reliant approach towards
their own development. In December 1987,
Our Friends Place opened its Therapeutic
Group Home to meet an unmet need in the
community – a home for girls of abuse,
neglect, and abandonment. The
program’s design provides long-term
residential services to girls in need of
therapeutic care, unable to live with their
families and who are often homeless.
The success of the
Group Home and our recognition of another
need – young women with very limited
financial and/or emotional support – led to
the opening of the Transitional Living
Center (TLC) in 1992 to help young women
reach economic self-sufficiency.
Our community
resource realities reinforce the importance
of Our Friends Place in providing care for
girls and young women. The need to
continue helping these underserved and
vulnerable populations is great.
The Daily Points of Light Foundation in Washington, D.C recognized Our Friends Place as a National Daily Point of Light on December 20, 1999.
The Center for Nonprofit Management recognized our Transitional Living Center program in 2011 with its Award for Excellence in Social Innovation for programs with a budget under $1 million.
