Therapeutic Group Home
Our Friends' Place operates a Therapeutic Group Home
which has the capacity to serve 8 girls ages 10-17 with
histories of abuse, neglect, abandonment, and behavioral
problems. Girls who reside in this facility experience a
safe homelike environment under the supervision of
degreed and professionally trained staff members. These
girls are referred from the Texas Department of Family
and Protective Services, area juvenile justice
departments, and private sources such as parents, school
counselors, and clergy.

Rehabilitative Therapy: Individual therapy assists
our girls in developing social and group interaction
skills. Under the supervision of a licensed professional
counselor, these sessions deal with issues which brought
the girls into care and teaches them problem-solving,
goal setting, and relationship-building skills.
Similarly designed are group therapy sessions that allow
girls to interact with other residents in a small group
setting. Group therapy focuses on relationships with
peers. These sessions are an important avenue for
sharing similar experiences, problem solving, and
learning how to overcome histories of abuse and neglect.
Recreational therapy uses activities that enhance
independence while teaching skills of self-reliance that
can be used throughout life. If appropriate, family
therapy is incorporated as another component of the
treatment plan. The focus of this component is the
"family unit" where participants work together to gain
insight of each other's issues and interpersonal skills.
Parenting Classes: Classes are provided to teach
parents about discipline, nurturing and effective
parenthood. Parents learn through discussion and
personal problem solving, as well as, interaction with
the facilitator.
Social Skills: The relationships at Our Friends'
Place are as family-like as possible. Our girls are
provided with opportunities for recreational activities
by maintaining relationships and utilizing services of
other community organizations such as the YMCA, Boys and
Girls Clubs, Girls, Inc., and Communities in Schools.
Groups from community organizations often plan events at
the Group Home that encourage interaction between our
girls and volunteers.
Collaborations: For the specialized therapeutic
needs of our girls, staff members network with
individual contractors and agencies that provide group
therapy specifically for survivors of sexual abuse.
Community Oriented Primary Care Clinics of Parkland
Memorial Hospital provide medical care to our girls. In
addition, Our Friends' Place holds memberships with The
Volunteer Center, the Mental Health Association of
Greater Dallas, the North Texas Food Bank, and the
Center for Nonprofit Management. The staff of Our
Friends' Place is committed to using existing community
resources to effectively meet the needs of our girls.
